Well how about that, it is. And how wonderful to wrap up in a cuddle of love. Welcome to the doula love cuddle quilt, a virtual tapestry of doulas celebrating world doula week this month. You can see the full quilt here.
World Doula Week begins on the 20th March, the same time as the Spring Equinox. Spring is the beginning of new life in the northern hemisphere and represents the return of fertility in many cultures.
The idea for creating a doula quilt was sparked by an online conversation between local Devon doulas about what to do to celebrate World Doula Week this year. And that conversation was in turn inspired by Ina May Gaskin’s The Safe Motherhood Quilt Project, where squares are made to remember the women who have died of pregnancy related causes.
As time was short we decided to create on online quilt, a patchwork of doulas photos. Brought together like this it’s like we have become a kind of unified force, bound by our common cause to support women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. We work quietly yet powerfully, often in the sidelines, holding space and faith in the birth process in a wide spectrum of situations and locations.
Originally I thought this would be a way to spread the word about what doulas do and show the variety of our faces. And since this project was launched it is doing that and more with photos flooding in every hour of the day from all over the world. When I click on the photo of a doula and get taken into the gallery of full screen and get to see the face and eyes of each woman individually I am struck by how beautiful, how strong and how utterly remarkable each woman is. When I see the quilt patchwork of all the photos together on the screen I feel the drawing of the circle, a coming together and uniting under a common bond. Some of these women I know and feel honoured to count as my friends as well as peers, others I only know through online media and others I have never met, yet the underlying thread is of unity. We are in this together. You don’t just become a doula, you have to choose it, or perhaps it chooses you! However you look at it, this isn’t just a job, this is a part of life and binds us together somehow. I feel honoured to be surrounded by such a group of women.
If you are a doula and would like to add your photo to the quilt please send me photo / name & website address via Facebook message to ‘Hazel Tree’ or alternatively email: email@example.com and the full quilt can be seen here: https://worlddoulalove.wordpress.com/
